House of San-Jo by Studio Gaon

Name: House of San-Jo

Designer: Studio Gaon

Location: Gwangju, Korea

Gwangju, the 6th largest city in Korea, is located in the heart of the agricultural Jeolla region, which is known for its rich & diverse scenery. Among the landscape, there sits a small mountain where this beautiful single story home was crafted on top of by Studio Gaon. House of San-Jo gets its name from a 19th century music style born in Korea. The grounds include Westward views,  floor to ceiling windows,  and fruit bearing foliage.

A terraced roof and stone staircase built into the mountain creates a natural look for this Korean household. According to the builders ,the rocks surrounding the grounds, which were excavated during the build, represent growing children since then are anchored to the ground by the mountain. With the backdrop of the city view from the house, the rocks play a nice role in decorating the landscape without the use of other, more expensive materials.

The house itself is actually small in size despite its location, bearing only 50 square meters of living space, which is divided into three sections: a kitchen, living room and a bathroom. These sections are connected with small decks that keep the mass of the house simple, much like a studio. Simple, but elegant if you ask me.
