Tools by Thomas Merlin

Tools is a minimalist coffee table designed by France-based designer Thomas Merlin. An expression of dialogue between wood and metal, Tools is a design inspired by geometric shapes, mechanical instruments, and folded elements. The folded elements make up the table in three separate pieces which are connected together by nuts and bolts. The tabletop is then pressed into the wooden legs, finally held together by wooden pins.

Aside from the incredible design, this piece is completely flat-packed. Prior to sourcing different furniture pieces from around the world, I could have cared less about flat-pack shipping or assembly. I had to learn the hard way how impossibly difficult and expensive it is to ship bulky furniture. With that being said, I appreciate this design in its holistic consideration for all aspects of its utility – from when it leaves the factory to when it is received in the customer’s hands.
