Name: XI Book Shelf
Designer: Gonçalo Campos
Location: Porto Salvo, Portugal
XI Book Shelf is a minimalist design created by Portugal-based designer Gonçalo Campos. The design of the bookshelf was centered around ease of assembly by removing the use of screws or fixtures. By carefully placing the fitted planks, the pieces lock together like a wooden puzzle.
Simple carvings can be found directly on the boards as well to serve as both assembly instructions and aesthetic supplement. The shelf was manufactured using CNC milling for very precise and quick production.
“Despite it’s dynamic look, this shelf is very sturdy, because of it’s X structure and the suspended vertical support, that holds the loose ends of the horizontal parts.”
I actually love that the instructions are placed directly on the wooden planks. I figured it was more of a typographical design element rather than serving an actual purpose. The design is incredibly visually appealing and sensibly minimal. The lack of screws and hinges means I will bring this along with to me to every new house I move to.
