Bloomsbury Residence is a minimalist townhouse located in London, United Kingdom, designed by Quinn Architects. Great care was taken to preserve the character of the building’s original design as well introducing contemporary elements and detailing to the internal spaces to create a high quality dwelling. The modification of the lower ground floor and basement optimised the usage of available floor space, and in turn maximised new spaces that were previously overlooked. Quinn Architects also reconfigured the rear of the home, transforming a dated annex into a double-height kitchen and mezzanine. A succession of poor quality refurbishments to the townhouse had left unresolved and underlying issues with the property’s structure and existing listed items. The historical and architectural significance of the property as well as its position in the surrounding area was crucial to developing a suitable approach to this renovation. For example, the rear courtyard elevations and terrace paving layout have been adapted from the proportions found in the adjacent Georgian sash windows.
