Location: New York, New York
115 Norfolk is a minimalist apartment located in Manhattan, designed by Grzywinski + Pons. The 24 unit apartment is on Manhattan’s Lower East Side and is a total of 27,000 sqf. In working with a limited budget, the architects were able to produce a condominium product that is comparable with high-priced competing developments.
Due to regulations in New York City’s Building Code, central courtyards are prohibited from being built. In order to circumvent this, the architects decided to explore, “upon a provision that allows for a narrow outer court wherein it’s depth is limited by it’s width, in an attempt to achieve the effect of a private interstitial outdoor space – a bridge between street and residence.”
There are a mixture of materials involved in the interior construction, ranging from marble, bleached oak, and granite. I love the contrast of harsh materials against the softer white walls and light wood floors.
