Ginan is a minimalist house located in Gifu, Japan, designed by Keitaro Muto Architects. A long zig-zagging pathway extends to the front entrance of this peculiar gravel structure. The front facade has trapezoidal geometries meshing together to form a distorted cube. The structure is formed in a such a way that a miniature courtyard and walled-off outdoor spaces can be remotely accessed.

There is a small basin located at the front entrance that protracts into the interior. One of my favorite aspects of this building is continuing the exterior gravel material into the inside space. I’ve only seen a handful of architects apply this type of design, but it looks great every time I come across it.
