Trunk is a minimalist store located in Tokyo, Japan, designed by Torafu Architects. The designers created the interior and exterior design for a new type of convenience store that opened in Shibuya’s Jingumae area. Trunk is located inside the 1F lounge of the Trunk Hotel and embodies a new approach to social issues under the theme “Socializing.” Deliverables included a space showcasing a curated selection of socially and environmentally friendly products.

The architects proposed a space that recreates the atmosphere of a regular convenience store by using off-the-shelf systematized steel fixtures inside a 30m2 site featuring a high ceiling. The high shelves take advantage of the raised ceiling and are connected side by side for strength. Since the fixtures are structurally connected, customers can walk beneath them as if entering a large commodity shelf.

In addition, they systematized the store by creating custom furniture, such as a trash box made from old recycled clothes and a counter made by changing the material of the shelf board while retaining its structure as is. The ceiling reveals a bare light steel frame underneath which is directly installed a linear lighting system like those seen in convenience stores, giving the whole space a sense of loftiness.
