Letter Opener is a minimalist design created by Brooklyn-based designer Bjarke Ballisager. The knife is a letter opener that, believe it or not, is made out of repurposed paper. The blade is made of recycled paper while the handle is made of wood. The designer was inspired when he decided to file down the leftover strips of Richlite, which was being used for constructing a countertop. (2)

The designers explain that the method of manufacturing the knife involves both digital technology and handcrafted techniques. While the general shape gets CNC’d in a mill in upstate New York, the rest of the blade is sanded, oiled, buffed and polished completely by hand. It also has a batarang-esque holster which hides the blade when not in use.
