Apartamento Vila Madalena is a minimalist apartment located in São Paulo, Brazil, designed by GUIMATTOS. Harnessing the innate warmth of materials like wood, linen, and cotton, as well as the comforting embrace of natural weave rugs, the design of the residence nurtures a well-balanced ambiance, both comforting and neutral. It eagerly awaits the occupant’s personal touch in the form of cherished mementos and artful décor. In the living area, an innovative approach to the classic white palette was taken. Different textures and layers were explored to create a nuanced, multi-dimensional space. Here, a white lacquer panel – shaped in a negative curve and artfully detached from the ceiling – illuminates the area, casting an inviting glow on the textured ceiling, reminiscent of gentle sand ripples.
This panel ties in with a positively curved freijó slat panel across the room, extending from the entrance hall and across the kitchen. The result is a cohesive wooden theme that harmoniously binds the various areas. The kitchen space exemplifies practical design, merging seamlessly into the living room, yet maintaining the option of privacy with a sliding door that echoes the design of the entrance hall panel. This layout flexibility transforms the social area to suit diverse requirements and encourages a seamless flow of interaction between spaces. Turning to the home theater, it is a bastion of versatility and comfort, basking in subdued lighting. The theater can effortlessly metamorphose into a guest room, courtesy of futon cushions that double as relaxed bedding, reminiscent of a laid-back campsite sleeping arrangement.
