Clay House is a minimal residence located in London, United Kingdom, designed by Bureau de Change. This design strategy also served a practical purpose, creating a natural separation between the fighters and the audience. Designer Mavropoulos adopted these historic principles to create a unique interior space. This concept was expressed through a subtle transition in materials from the kitchen to the living area. Specifically, the use of distinctive tiles, characterized by club and square cuts, reflect a traditional aesthetic. Mavropoulos noted the significance of preserving the unique value of these existing architectural features. The intention was not simply to retain these elements but to leverage their distinctiveness to create a fresh yet contextually appropriate addition. To further optimize the interior space, the design includes an extension that incorporates the existing party wall of the neighboring rear extension. This approach utilized the wall’s lowest height to determine the eave height, resulting in a skewed and faceted shape. This form was not arbitrary but was directly influenced by the immediate surroundings.
