Casa AM is a minimalist home designed by Milan-based architects FORM_A. This renovation project carefully considers its urban surroundings, adapting its scale, form, and spaces to enhance its relationship with the city. At its core, the project acts as a dialogue between the old and the new, selectively preserving certain elements while introducing changes where necessary. The architectural design introduces two ground-floor volumes divided by a shared entrance courtyard. A significant feature is the incorporation of the existing bridge-building into the main structure, which is then connected to a second volume through a terrace. This second volume pays homage to the traditional brick wall but with adjusted heights and proportions. Entry to the Casa AM is via one of the ground-floor volumes, leading into a double-height entrance area that not only welcomes visitors but also establishes a visual connection with both the courtyard and the upper levels of the building.
This design choice allows natural light to flood the interior and offers a glimpse of the building’s structural design from within. The design’s approach to windows and openings carefully balances the old with the new, creating a harmonious rhythm on the façades that reflects the original structure’s pattern while integrating a large opening in the secondary volume to merge indoor and outdoor spaces. Internally, a central axis lined with cupboards and utility spaces organizes the first floor, effectively dividing it into distinct sleeping quarters. This thoughtful arrangement supports the flow between spaces, enhancing the home’s functionality. From a material standpoint, the project utilizes beige bush-hammered cement plaster for the façade, a nod to local material traditions reimagined for contemporary tastes. The pitched roofs, a common architectural feature in the area, are retained, ensuring the building remains in visual harmony with its neighbors.
