West Village Townhouse is a minimal townhome located in New York, New York, designed by Margaux Lafond, styled by Mariana Marcki-Matos. With an uncertain timeline for their stay, they sought a temporary yet comfortable living arrangement. The townhouse, originally renovated in 2000, retains a distinct late ’90s aesthetic that serves as a foundational design element. To accommodate the rental’s temporary nature, the design approach focused on flexibility, selecting vintage and modular furnishings that could easily adapt to future moves.
This decision allowed for a balance between style and practicality, ensuring that pieces could transition with the family if needed. A particular design challenge arose on the top floor, where the primary bedroom is located. This space benefits from abundant natural light due to multiple skylights and an open layout, which, while visually appealing, made it difficult to achieve blackout conditions for restful sleep. The solution was to create a custom alcove around the bed, using a large curtain to enclose the area, offering both a sense of privacy and controlled light.
