03/01 Bed is a minimalist bed created by London-based studio 1 0 0 9. In a workshop on the industrial edge of London, raw aluminum catches the light streaming through tall windows, its unfinished surface revealing subtle mill markings that tell of its industrial origin. The bed presents itself with almost mathematical precision: a low box section frame hovering above the floor on two transverse cylindrical supports.

There is something theatrical in this suspension, as if the horizontal plane is performing an act of levitation. This theatrical quality is no accident. “We approach every object as a stage for daily life,” explains Isabel Ogden, who co-founded the scenographic design studio with Matteo Mastrandrea in 2023. What is immediately striking is the honesty of materials. The aluminum remains untreated, allowing the natural properties of the metal to perform both functionally and aesthetically.

The fabrication process – hand-assembled and welded – leaves subtle evidence of human intervention, creating a counterpoint to the industrial nature of the raw material. This tension between industrial production and handcraft places the bed in conversation with the history of twentieth-century modernism while pushing forward into new territory.

The cylindrical feet recall the formal vocabulary of machines – industrial rollers or mechanical components – while the horizontal plane suggests repose and rest. This duality creates a productive visual tension. “We’re interested in what happens when utilitarian materials are recontextualized,” notes Mastrandrea as he demonstrates how the bed comes together without visible fasteners, another subtle detail that makes the piece feel monolithic despite its component parts.
