The storefront window at EHAE Specialty in Seoul, South Korea, runs wide and horizontal across the facade, and designer Ju Won Lee let it decide the plan before the tables did. The specialty coffee shop pours single-origin espresso rather than filter coffee, and the interior, narrow and elongated, was arranged so customers and staff share the same outward view instead of facing each other across a table. Conventional face-to-face seating was minimized in favor of a long window counter and bench seating, a plan that lets people sit, talk, or sit alone without the room dictating which.
A dividing wall inserted partway down the long plan carries the space’s storage, and it was built unusually thick to hold it. Four large doors finished in microcement close over the storage and read as abstract panels rather than cabinetry, closer to gallery walls than a stockroom. Where the wall meets the entrance column, built-in stainless-steel shelving and a recessed speaker are set into the same structure, and the wall angles at that point to keep clear of the swing of the entrance door. Circulation, storage, display, and audio equipment are resolved in that one angled section rather than distributed across separate fittings.
The bench along the window, named The Bench That Made Room for the Light, curves inward at one corner to leave space for a floor lamp rather than crowding around it. The seat appears to have shifted its own line to accommodate the lamp, a small adjustment that lets the wall, the light, and the seating read as one arrangement instead of three competing objects.
The island counter drops below the height of a typical commercial bar, narrowing the physical distance between staff and customers across it. Eight cabinet fronts face the customer side, detailed with the proportions of residential cabinetry rather than commercial fittings, and the same lower height puts the espresso machine and grinders within easier reach of the barista. The side counter, where sinks and ovens sit, stays at standard commercial height, tall enough for the standing work those tasks require.
