Coal Soul is a minimal light created by France-based designer Ferréol Babin. In 2014 he has been selected for a one-year residency to work at Fabrica, the Benetton’s communications research centre, based in Treviso, Italy. Under the direction of Sam Baron, his projects included industrial design, scenography or conceptual installations. His projects are always based on an awareness of function and rationality, combined with a poetic and emotional dimension. Coal Soul is a unique piece made for the exhibition “Domestic Appeal” curated by Matylda Krzykowski at Chamber Gallery in New York. The Coal Soul lamp is a matte, dark, and rough piece that seems to have been burnt or aged by time. It is a still and silent object, frozen like a statue. The light is constructed of PVC, wood, and steel – and is covered with pigmented Jesmonite.
