Torno Collection is a minimalist series of chairs designed by Stockholm-based studio Form Us With Love for +Halle. The Torno series is designed to enable break-out areas, making it simple to create public amenities by configuring a set of lightweight and durable chairs, sofas and, tables. ‘With Torno, you can facilitate a terrace, lounge, square, or dining space, based on a flexible system. When we first prototyped the series we mimicked the behavior of a rotating set of activities, where work and leisure time tends to blend,’ Jonas Pettersson, Co-founder and CEO at Form Us With Love says.

The guiding theme for the Torno series is the purpose of mobility. Simple, effortless, and without snobbery, the series offers aluminum chairs and tables that are easy to adjust to individual needs. With chairs designed in open backrest configurations, the collection supports self-determined lives, giving the user a range of options, as the chair encourages people to sit in a range of ways and not just straight on facing the table directly in front of them. Moveable chairs and tables allow different people to make the space their own—providing a good seating experience, in an airport, a café, park, or studio. ‘Today there is a need to respond to different levels of comfort. We designed Torno as an appliance— from a full aluminim chair to both seat and backrest amply cushioned,’ Pettersson explains.

The Torno collection demonstrates a capacity from +Halle to research, observe, and challenge the market by introducing furniture that is behaviorally led, manifested in chairs and stools catering to workers who favor functional, informal spaces. ‘With Torno, you can easily build features in the public realm, integrating relaxation, eating, and social fabric into a mixed-use space; a flexible makeover to any open-area asset. When first installed, it was evident that people responded to the accessibility of the series—easy to lift, the furniture provides a natural sense of ownership. With a basic but inviting expression, the Torno collection, keeps public space versatile,’ says Martin Halle, Co-Owner and Creative Director at +Halle.

With inherited values of the Nest series, +Halle and Form Us With Love, continue to investigate the typologies of a lofty landscape, adding elements of openness, transparency and view across the environment. ‘The brief for Torno was rooted in the fact that we all respond differently to the place we inhabit, however, furniture can transform us to think: “I will just move that chair to suit my need for the day.” In that way, the design is built on behavior, just as much as it becomes a part of an improved experience, ’ Halle says.

Torno series include chairs, stools and sofas, as well as two different sized tables. The collection has indoor and outdoor possibilities, offered with a range of upholstery options to choose from, making the collection easily adaptable to all types of spaces. ‘The utility aspects of the Torno series come as a result of several years of research into the typology of public seating, engaging the user to become an active part of any environment,’ Pettersson concludes.
