Banyan Chaise is a minimalist chaise lounge created by Shanghai-based designer Tongqi Lu. Designer Tongqi Lu focuses on creating furniture and fixtures that bridge the gap between urban environments and natural elements. Based in large cities like Shanghai, her work centers on enhancing sensory awareness in modern living spaces. The Banyan Collection, comprising a chaise lounge and a portable lamp, takes inspiration from the banyan tree, a prominent species in southern China. The design mirrors the tree’s distinctive roots, which grow downward from the stem to form a complex root system. This system represents the movement of people across cities and countries, bringing their personal experiences and values while remaining connected to their origins. Characterized by a durable matte metal finish and smooth, flowing lines, the pieces offer both comfort and a sense of calm. The collection is also designed to evoke the atmosphere of East Asia’s monsoon regions, inviting users to engage with their surroundings through a tactile and visual experience.
