Crushed Coffee Table is a minimalist coffee table created by Belgium-based designer Ben Storms as part of LIQUID SOLIDS for Objects with Narratives. The coffee table is carved from a single block of green onyx, showcasing his innovative approach to design. This piece begins with a distorted steel structure, created by welding metal sheets and applying intense pressure to achieve its unique form. Storms then uses a three-dimensional scan to meticulously recreate this steel form in natural stone, merging perception with reality. The green onyx, with its inherent translucence and crystalline quality, adds a layer of intrigue to the design. The patterns in the stone, formed over thousands of years through water seepage, seem to capture the fluidity of this natural process. The partial polishing of the onyx enhances the illusion of fluidity in this solid material, challenging traditional notions of materiality.
