Duality of Matter is a minimalist collection of stools and objects designer by Lisbon-based studio THER. The collection, shot at Montoya – a curated worksapce – showcases a striking balance between contrasting forms that are simultaneously distinct and harmonious. Natasza and Tomás have embraced the philosophy of ‘We are what we explore,’ which is evident in THER, their latest project. This ethos underscores their commitment to continuous exploration and experimentation in design. Through their journey, marked by a series of trials and innovations, they have carved out a unique identity as designers, defined by both creativity and consciousness. The choice of materials in their work highlights their meticulous and thoughtful approach to design. Tomás demonstrates an exceptional understanding of geometry, often choosing to preserve the natural edges of wood, enhancing them where possible.

His use of natural oils and waxes, along with the Yakisugi technique, a Japanese method of wood preservation through controlled charring, reflects a deep respect for both the material and the environment. Conversely, Natasza’s contributions, comprising organic-shaped bowls and stools, complement the collection by infusing it with a sense of natural harmony. Her preference for unglazed, textured surfaces adds an element of raw authenticity to the pieces. The “Duality of Matter” collection is a manifestation of two distinct yet synergistic talents, each specializing in different materials, but converging to form a unified and cohesive body of work. The pieces are characterized by their soft forms and a responsible approach to creation, evident in the selection of materials like chestnut and acacia wood, as well as clay from the Iberian Peninsula.
