Goshun Stool is a minimalist furniture collection by the Antwerp-based designer, Yoon Shun. As an ongoing collection, it currently consists of a series of seating designs: the Goshun Collection, Bench and two iterations of the Goshun Collection, Stool.
The collection embodies Shun’s philosophy of uncovering the hidden beauty of objects through craftsmanship and keen attention to detail. Each piece in the Goshun collection utilizes a traditional wood-burning technique, where solid oak beams are charred — blackening areas of wood to create a stripe-like pattern — and then hand-carved to reveal a lighter, unweathered layer of wood. The result is a striking contrast that showcases the beauty of the oakwood material in various forms: from its natural state to extremes of a singed surface or untouched, “pure” layers that are exposed through careful carving.
Following this process of charring and hand-carving, the pieces are covered in generous amounts of tung oil, which is used to preserve the collection’s delicate patterns and enhance the natural beauty of the oakwood by providing a rich, deep, and warm finish.
Emphasizing principles of balancing function and beauty, and merging traditional techniques with contemporary design aesthetics, the Goshun collection is an ongoing project that will expand to include lighting, tables, and shelf designs in the near future.
