Milano Side Table is a minimalist side table created by Japan-based designer Shinichi Utsumi. Its structure is crafted from a single piece of wood, with the top and legs integrated seamlessly. The legs, hollowed into an elliptical shape inspired by the vaulted ceilings of Palazzo Turconi, allow light to pass through their central gap. This interplay of light and shadow introduces a subtle, dynamic element to the design. The table juxtaposes asymmetry—rooted in traditional Japanese aesthetics—with the visual harmony of Western symmetry, creating a unique dialogue between these cultural influences. Viewed from different angles, the table reveals nuanced shifts in form, adding depth to its restrained simplicity. Sustainability is central to the design. The tabletop is repurposed from the material cut out to form the legs, minimizing waste. Constructed from strand board made from thinned Japanese cedar, the material is sourced and milled by Eswood in Kakamigahara City, Gifu Prefecture.
