Miniatures is a minimal collection created by London-based designer Abid Javed for Galerie Perrie’s Autumn/Winter collection. Abid Javed is a research scientist turned ceramic artist who lives and works in Hackney, east London. He combines his two passions of science and ceramics to create impressive sculptural forms (termed ‘molecular objects’) inspired by molecular biology. These encompass a series of sculptures and vessels. Javed predominantly draws influence for his ceramic pieces from the shapes and patterns he uncovers in the intricate world of molecular biology. He spent years researching and developing a method of ceramics that enables him to express what he sees as “the storylines of biology.”
The resulting sculptures and vessels are all hand-built using pinch, coil and slab forming methods, and left unglazed in order to let “the clay bodies to take center stage,” he says. Working in a range of clay bodies, each piece is carefully crafted to bring a storyline or form alive. Through his ceramic practice, Javed is able to translate his findings under the microscope into a tangible visual language. Galerie Perrie is an on online contemporary art and collectible design gallery, curated by Gabé Hirschowitz. The gallery offers a curated collection of unique works from around the globe, and only deals in originals and limited editions.
