PF Chair is a minimalist chair created by Tokyo-based designer Masaya Kawamoto. The PF Chair introduces a subtle innovation in furniture design by incorporating a “flattening” process on sections of a round steel pipe. This alteration softens the backrest, enhancing its comfort without the need for additional materials or padding. While the technique of pipe flattening is not uncommon, its thoughtful application to furniture marks a fresh approach. The collection includes two variations—one with armrests and one without—both showcasing a minimal, linear design that draws attention to the distinctive backrest. The name PF Chair derives from “press” and “flat,” referencing the key elements of its construction.

The chair’s aesthetic is further elevated through a specialized coloring method known as “salt bath coloring.” This technique forms an oxide film on stainless steel, resulting in a unique and intricate surface pattern without the use of paints or pigments. The process, executed by skilled artisans, ensures each chair is a one-of-a-kind piece. Two color options are available: Oboro and Kasumi, each offering nuanced visual effects influenced by factors such as material type, steel thickness, and cooling speed. Beyond its visual appeal, the PF Chair is designed with practicality in mind. Its disassemblable structure allows for compact packaging and straightforward assembly, making it both efficient and accessible.
