Rural Shelf is a minimal maple shelf created by the Switzerland-based designer Juri Roemmel. In his research, Juri Roemmel focuses on both the materials, manufacturing processes, and the context, people, and diversity in which they are used. Through careful observation and practical implementation, he creates ordinary objects that challenge habitual thinking. The shelf design is inspired by traditional rural shelving and features beams with curved cutouts that break up the straight lines of the panels. This combination of straight lines and rounded shapes is a common theme in Roemmel’s work and merges traditional construction techniques with modern fabrication methods. The shelf does not require screws or nails for assembly and uses a hidden burr strip to hold the pieces together, add strength to the panel, and prevent warping.
