S 18 is a minimal table created by Berlin-based designer Uli Budde for Thonet. Reminiscent of an infinite loop, the linear tubular steel frame forms a pendant corresponding to the tabletop and the central motif of the circle. From the onset, the form of the circle was very important for the design. The motif of the circle in this design is an ode to the first Thonet bentwood classics. Linear elements are also essential for the design. The tubular steel frame results from a closed loop, hinting at Marcel Breuer’s layout of lines that was typical for the Bauhaus and perceived as infinite. Based on these two geometric forms, the table reveals ever-new perspectives. This dynamics gives it a spontaneous and young character as well as a classic one.
