The Shadow Chair is a minimalist furniture piece by the London-based designer, Hawa Al-Najjar. Referencing historical inspirations — from medieval architecture to mythological motifs — this sculptural piece invites viewers to engage with its curvilinear shapes and playful asymmetry.
Crafted from blackened birchwood, the chair’s frame features fluid, hand-cut silhouettes reminiscent of medieval tracery. A diamond-shaped cutout in the backrest creates a striking, window-like opening — an unexpected detail that allows light to pass through, softening the chair’s bold, architectural lines. Complemented by curved, scalloped edges and a pop of deep blue on the chair’s inner legs, these details add a sense of softness and contrast, balancing the chair’s structural presence with whimsical decorative touches.
Al-Najjar’s approach lies in blending form with understated, yet enchanting details, achieving a harmonious balance between expressiveness and restraint. “The subtle decorative elements in the Shadow Chair, from the delicate silhouette to the thoughtfully painted details and gentle shapes, are signature touches that weave consistently throughout my designs,” she shares.
