Surface Chair is a minimalist chair created by Seoul-based designer YoungJin Shin. The chair is crafted with a sensibility of maintaining spaciousness in its surrounding environment. The low backrest not only contributes to a sense of openness but also presents a visually strong and tidy aspect, a testament to the thoughtful removal of unnecessary embellishments. The careful choice to emphasize the hinges further enhances its streamlined appearance, providing a subtle yet effective contrast against its wooden structure. Exhibiting a notable efficiency in its creation process, the chair is fashioned using two distinct thicknesses of wood plates, 20mm and 25mm respectively, which are deftly sculpted through 2D cutting techniques before assembly. The chairs can be conveniently stacked, creating an opportunity for additional storage space – a niche to house a book or a magazine in the gap of the backrest, merging utility with sleek design.
