Waves in Object, Shelf is a minimalist shelf created by Antwerp-based designer Yoon Shun. Yoon Shun has long been captivated by the innate stories told by materials like metal and wood. These materials, which have played crucial roles in human progress, resonate deeply with him, fueling his innovative designs. One of his notable works, the ‘Orbit Collection,’ showcases his ability to blend craft with narrative. In this collection, Shun employed a unique welding technique, resulting in designs that not only fortify the metal but also provide it with a distinctive ornamentation. This deft fusion of function and aesthetic allows each piece to narrate a distinct tale, elevating the object’s ambiance.

However, as a testament to his versatility, Shun’s recent ‘Wavy Shelf’ series marks a departure from his previous methods. Here, he consciously forgoes welding, adopting an alternative technique: bonding aluminum components. This divergence provides a refreshing perspective, distinguishing this new line from his prior works. The shelves, fashioned from 3mm aluminum plates, undergo a meticulous hand-machine process to achieve their desired shape. They feature two vertical frames, each crafted with a calculated radius for optimum stability. These frames establish touchpoints on either side where they intersect with the horizontal shelf. The bond, cemented with adhesive and the inherent tension of the vertical frames, ensures the structure remains steadfast.
