1902 is a minimalist loft located in Brussels, Belgium, designed by POESENVANHIEL architects. The architects introduced a glass partition with sliding doors aligned with the pre-existing steel columns, adding a corridor-like space to enhance the flow within the loft. This strategic placement allows for seamless movement without the need to navigate the entire area, streamlining the resident’s experience. To accommodate privacy needs, the design incorporates textured glass in select areas. The choice of materials distinguishes the movable panels from the stationary elements, making the operation of the sliding doors straightforward.
The design maintains the loft’s open feel when desired, yet offers the option for seclusion by closing the panels, thus providing a balance between openness and privacy without compromising natural light. The project’s focus extended beyond mere aesthetics, with careful consideration given to functional details. Light switches were crafted not only to be visually appealing but also thoughtfully placed to enhance usability. This attention to detail supports the overarching goal of guiding occupants through the space, creating an intuitive journey from one area to the next. The design team also differentiated spaces such as the kitchen and bathroom by using distinct floor finishes around fixed furniture, subtly defining areas without the need for physical barriers, thereby preserving the loft’s open concept while introducing a sense of order and functionality.
