1hu Brewhouse is a minimalist space located in Wuxi, China, designed by Duality Design. The design parallels the craft of brewing, which combines natural elements such as malt, water, hops, and yeast with the brewer’s unique methods, with every component of the space—from the display of production equipment to the overall architectural elements. During a visit to the 1hu brewery in Shanghai, the presence of large stainless-steel fermentation tanks, the sounds of the brewing process, and the distinctive smell of fermentation were notably impactful. This vibrant atmosphere of brewing inspired the design to integrate these sensory experiences into the brewhouse environment.

Drawing inspiration from the brewery itself, the furniture in the brewhouse, including seating, mimics the appearance of stacked malt bags, utilizing Christiane Högner’s cushionized sofa technique. This allows guests to sit comfortably, soaking in sunlight and observing the brewing process through clear partitions, all while enjoying a craft beer. The layout places fermentation tanks in view opposite the bar, which is incorporated into a broad, C-shaped concrete beam that stretches across the room. This setup positions the brewing process as both a central and background feature. The bar itself is simplified to three base supports and two countertops—one for the bartender and another for guest dining—encouraging interaction between staff and visitors.
