Aesop Balmain is a minimalist house located in Sydney, Australia, designed by Henry Wilson. Created in collaboration with Aesop, the design for the Balmain store emerged from an understanding of the area, materials recovered on-site, and the context of setting. Raw sandstone walls, fireplaces and hidden doorways revealed during removal of the former fit-out have been retained and exposed; tinted concrete terrazzo references local mid-century apartment buildings. Pale native timbers and a soft palette harmonise with abundant natural light. Off-the-shelf industrial components provide solutions for interior fittings such as shelving and sink frames, their repurposing complemented by vintage furniture and customized lighting.
