Albatros I is a minimalist residence by the Paris-based architecture and interior design studio Atelier Double. Located in Garches, a western suburb of Paris, the 112 square meter (1,206 square foot) attic apartment was acquired in its raw state within a newly constructed building and transformed into a fully realized home. From architectural design and construction supervision to the selection of furniture, decor, and artwork, the studio oversaw every aspect of the project to create a highly personalized living environment.
The design features an open plan layout in the common area, maximizing space and natural light, as well as a primary suite, two children’s bedrooms, and adjoining bathrooms. Located beneath the building’s eaves, the apartment presented a number of technical constraints, including exposed ducts and structural elements. Instead of allowing these features to disrupt the interiors, the studio integrated and concealed them through sculptural plaster and custom woodwork, transforming practical necessities into architectural features while maintaining clean, uninterrupted spaces.
Meanwhile, the material palette draws directly from the apartment’s surroundings, balancing views of a verdant golf course with panoramas across Paris. Custom woodwork is paired with polished concrete and metal accents to create a tactile interior that feels bright and timeless. The furnishings continue this language through a minimalist, almost brutalist aesthetic, while several bespoke pieces designed by the studio, including burnt wood and oak-and-steel coffee tables, reinforce the project’s custom character. Handwoven rugs, tailored curtains, and artworks by Stéphane Richier and Pascale Catoire further enrich the interiors while remaining faithful to the home’s understated material palette.
With Albatros I, Atelier Double demonstrates its holistic approach to residential design, guiding a project from an empty shell to a fully resolved living environment. Through thoughtful planning and custom pieces, the studio creates a residence that feels both refined and enduring.
