Amsterdam Apartment is a minimal home located in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, designed by Joan Alcobé Architect. Perched atop a 20th-century structure, a 2.5-story apartment has undergone a thoughtful renovation, transforming it into a contemporary residence that reflects the dynamic personality of its owners. The design juxtaposes a vibrant color palette with the building’s historical elements, creating a warm and energetic atmosphere that complements its architectural roots. A key focus of the project was maximizing natural light on the upper floors.
By eliminating outdated attic storage and altering the roofline, the space has been opened up, allowing sunlight to cascade throughout. These structural interventions not only enhance the apartment’s luminosity but also introduce a balance between practicality and visual impact. The renovation employs materials such as travertine, oak, and brass, adding depth and texture to the interior. Original beams have been retained and paired with bespoke joinery in carefully chosen hues, creating a harmonious dialogue between the apartment’s historical framework and its modern upgrades.
