Arts & Crafts House is a minimal home located in Sydney, Australia, designed by AP Design House. The architects describe their approach as “archaeological rather than decorative” – uncovering and amplifying the building’s inherent qualities rather than imposing contemporary aesthetics for their own sake. This philosophy manifests in the raked ceilings that now soar overhead, liberated from earlier renovations that had concealed their graceful proportions. These original elements serve as counterpoint to new interventions, creating a dialogue across time that feels both natural and inevitable.

What is particularly striking about this transformation is how the relocation of primary living spaces to the lower level resolves the home’s relationship with its surroundings. The kitchen – now expanded into a proper dining space – opens to gardens previously disconnected from daily life. “We wanted to challenge the notion that heritage homes must maintain rigid hierarchies of space,” notes the lead designer. “By inverting the traditional arrangement, we created a more honest connection to how people actually live today.”

Materials throughout tell a similar story of continuity and evolution. Original timber elements have been carefully restored, their patina preserved as testament to the structure’s journey through time. New cabinetry and floor treatments echo these historic elements without mimicking them – a subtle detailing that balances minimalist tendencies with contextual warmth. The coffee table, centrally positioned in the main living area, exemplifies this approach with its clean lines and traditional joinery techniques that honor craftsmanship while rejecting nostalgia.

This project represents a broader shift in our approach to historic structures – one that prioritizes spatial experience and functionality over mere preservation of appearance. The transformation embodies what architectural historian David Leatherbarrow calls “the paradox of weathering” – the idea that buildings acquire meaning and value through thoughtful adaptation rather than resistance to change.
