Casa Ohana is a minimalist home located in Oaxaca, Mexico, designed by VERTEBRAL. Visitors are introduced to the home by a striking monolithic installation of Mesquite and Plumbago, leading to the structure with its floating roof that provides ample shade. The sound of crashing waves against the shore resonates through the space, imbuing the home with an aura of movement akin to a ship braving turbulent seas. The social area of Casa OHANA is anchored by a raised, staggered platform designed to capture panoramic views and breezes from multiple directions.
A light overhang extends above, providing shelter from the intense summer rain and winter sun. The interplay between the sloped platform and the flat roof creates a tunnel effect, funneling the coastal breeze through the space to naturally cool the home. In contrast, the private areas of the residence are designed with a sense of seclusion, enclosed and intimate, save for two key views: one toward the ocean and another into a private garden. Each room is enhanced by small gardens that foster tranquility and privacy, offering a natural counterbalance to the expansive social area.
