DJN Apartment is a minimalist apartment located in São Paulo, Brazil, designed by Nildo José Arquitetura. This 266 m² apartment, conceived by the NJ+ team for a family of eight who primarily live abroad, embodies what we might call “anticipated nostalgia” – spaces created not for constant habitation but for meaningful intermittent presence.

The minimalist aesthetic requested by the clients isn’t merely stylistic preference but a reflection of transient domesticity. When home becomes an occasional destination rather than a constant, the need for visual clarity and material authenticity intensifies. Here, the incorporation of the former balcony into the living area creates a theatrical volume where the blue São Paulo sky becomes an active design element, constantly changing yet consistently present.

This project’s relationship with Brazilian design history is particularly fascinating. The Oscar Niemeyer Alta armchair creates a dialogue with the concrete spiral staircase – both sharing formal simplicity and structural boldness while representing different eras of Brazilian modernism. The century-old Persian Kirman rug introduces historical depth, while Jorge Zalszupin’s Gávea stools in the kitchen connect to Brazil’s mid-century design renaissance when European influences merged with local material sensibilities.

Materials tell the story of place: burnt cement, Travertino Navona marble, and indigenous woods like freijó with silk straw accents create what the designers describe as “Brazilian identity” – a subtle but profound connection to locale for a family whose presence here is intermittent. The Tauari wood flooring provides warmth against the cool marble and cement surfaces, establishing a material temperature that balances the minimalist approach.
