East Bluff Residence is a minimalist house located in Newport Beach, California, designed by Studio Gutow. The expansive 3,000 sq ft residence epitomizes modern coastal living, a product of the designers’ commitment to open dialogue and mutual understanding during their design journey. The client, submerged in her high-pressure surgical career, longed for serenity at home. Initially drawn to traditional and rustic interiors, the surgeon’s tastes evolved through visits to contemporary homes with Berman. This exploration culminated in the selection of a clean, layered aesthetic that genuinely resonates with her essence. An elegantly understated abode adorned with hand-picked furnishings, balancing simplicity with warmth. Distinctiveness was paramount. The house needed to shine individually amidst the community’s residences.

This individuality was realized by deftly integrating age-old materials in a contemporary framework. Key features include the Fior Di Pesco Italian marble countertops, the warming embrace of Mexican tumbled limestone in key spaces, a chocolate travertine fireplace, and the inviting touch of aged limestone floors in the living area. Additionally, the pink lady quartzite in the powder room serves as a highlight, as do the custom Venetian plastered walls and the walnut wood paneling in communal zones. Elevated ceilings wrapped in cedar, paired with abundant skylights and windows, flood the space with light. Studio Gutow’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in the curation of vintage and antique pieces.

Not only do these pieces bring a unique touch, but they also address the modern challenges of extended delivery times. Notable pieces include Arthur Umanoff bar stools, a Carlo Scarpa for Bernini dining set, and distinct furnishings like the marble table from Obsolete and a Lawson Fenning boucle chair. The living area is further enhanced by a Willy Guhl planter and a Piet Kramer Art Deco cabinet, and the primary spaces are beautified with French mirrors and a repurposed church desk. The floors are adorned with Persian wool rugs, offering a cohesive color palette that flows from room to room. Complementing these are the rich textures of Fortuny and alpaca pillows, mohair sofas, and customized headboards made of cotton velvet and linen. The addition of Indian silk woven accessories only further amplifies the soothing aura of this Newport Beach haven.
