House WADD is a minimal residence located in Aalter, Belgium, designed by BASIL architecture. The existing home, with its cavernous, shut-off living spaces, is repurposed for peripheral roles – transformed into storage areas, a television corner, and an office. A striking contrast is born when one steps into the new segment of the house. Here, the main living spaces unfurl as luminous expanses, seamlessly melding with the verdant charm of the garden and the expansive landscape beyond. This deft play of light and openness challenges the more traditional, darker design of the existing home, creating a symbiosis of past and present. The extension’s light steel structure underlines the pavilion-like ambiance. Not just functional, the home’s floorplan becomes a journey. Paths diverge into an indoor and outdoor circuit, crafted through airy canopies functioning both as sunshades and a sheltered terrace area. This terrace area, complete with an outdoor kitchen, becomes a fulcrum point – a transition into an insulated, multi-purpose space designed for the children. It adds another layer of functionality to the property, while maintaining its inherent connection to nature and light.
