Lacalor Serigraphy Studio is a minimal space located in Madrid, Spain, designed by KAL A. La Calor, located in Madrid’s Carabanchel district between the neighborhoods of Opael and Comillas, opens an art and screen-printing studio run by artists Bruno del Gidice and Candela Sotos. The studio has a large open workspace of 90 square meters and a back garden of 120 square meters. Three major actions were completed: opening the rear façade to connect the studio to the garden, building a light structure to create an upper floor space, and completely renovating the space. The garden was only accessible through a small opaque door in the premises, a former carpentry workshop. Part of the back façade was demolished to connect both spaces, and by installing a new lintel, a new large double door could be opened, emphasizing a fluid relationship between the interior and exterior spaces.

In addition to the color chosen for the floor, this action improves natural lighting in the workspace and reduces reliance on electrical lighting during the day. A new steel and wood structure has been assembled to create a second-floor space for an independent studio in order to articulate the entire workspace. The old linear staircase to the upper floor has been replaced by a slender spiral staircase that optimizes and frees up space on the ground floor. Finally, the new workshop necessitated a total overhaul of the installations, utilizing the existing lighting and wiring. All of the elements, including the structure and carpentry, have been painted in metallic colors, allowing the intervention to blend in with the machinery and, as a result, the space will quietly take on the identity of its occupants.
