Quiet Time is a minimalist apartment located in Guangdong, China, designed by HGJ Space Design. Upon entering, one is greeted by a space with extensive white space. Storage areas and the shoe cabinet are seamlessly integrated, maintaining a clean and cohesive visual flow. The use of a stainless steel mirror at the entrance not only enhances the ritual of coming home by providing a place to check one’s appearance but also visually expands the space, blending the real and the perceived to create a memorable, pure ambiance. The living and dining areas are unified by a gently curving light fixture, descending naturally from the ceiling. This feature exemplifies the wabi-sabi aesthetic of incomplete beauty while also reflecting a simple, unencumbered approach to life. The transition from the entrance to these communal spaces reveals a thoughtful layering of volumes, with natural materials such as warm wood veneers and green stone adding texture and depth.
In the kitchen, the interaction of different materials—stone, metal cabinets, and wood veneers—creates a harmonious blend of stability and fluidity. Low-saturation colors and handcrafted finishes return to their most natural state, embracing the raw, timeworn feel that is both grounding and relaxing. The living room features modular sofas that can be reconfigured according to the homeowner’s preferences, fostering a sense of freedom and comfort. Like pebbles naturally arranged in a stream, these sofas encourage a flexible flow of movement and allow sunlight to fill the space, enhancing its warmth and tranquility. Throughout the home, the use of natural textures and low-saturation hues creates a cohesive, understated atmosphere. This minimalist approach fosters an environment of calm and purity, where each element, from the freeform furniture arrangements to the small details like the presence of a cat, contributes to a welcoming, artistic ambiance.
