The Rock House is a minimalist home by the Miami and Ghent-based multidisciplinary practice, Design Studio JAC. Located in southwestern Utah near the Arizona border, the residence sits atop an ancient lava field within a dramatic landscape defined by black volcanic rock, red sandstone formations, desert flora and fauna, and distant mountain ranges. Designed as a retreat for a family with a deep appreciation for design and nature, the Rock House offers a sense of refuge while maintaining a strong connection to its surroundings.

The design draws directly from the landscape itself, embracing the colors and shifting light of the Mojave Desert. Organized across two levels, the home balances expansive gathering spaces with more intimate private rooms. Open-plan living, dining, and kitchen areas flow into one another, while floor-to-ceiling windows frame sweeping views of the surrounding terrain and strengthen the connection between indoors and out. Throughout, the architecture allows the landscape to take center stage and reinforces a sense of calm.

Material choices further root the home within its setting: natural stucco, stone, and metal finishes echo the surrounding lava fields, and a palette drawn from nearby rock formations, cacti, and other desert plants lends the residence a quiet cohesion. Inside, dark Belgian wood floors reference the tones of volcanic stone, while lime-plastered walls introduce a sense of warmth and softness. Bedrooms wrapped in microcement create a meditative atmosphere, and sculptural stone kitchen islands act as monolithic focal points within the open living spaces. Elsewhere, custom cold-rolled steel elements, including a dramatic fireplace and staircase, provide moments of contrast against the otherwise earthy material palette.

“Design often arrives in different ways — sometimes it’s a slow unfolding, other times it comes in a single moment of clarity,” shares the team at Design Studio JAC. “With this home, the vision revealed itself immediately. On the five-hour flight back to Miami after our first site visit, we sketched the entire design, and remarkably, the concept remained nearly unchanged from those first drawings. It felt less like invention and more like discovery — as if the home was already there, waiting to be realized.”

With the Rock House, Design Studio JAC demonstrates how thoughtful design can strengthen the relationship between architecture and landscape. The result is a contemporary home that feels both refined and rooted in its surroundings.
