San Francisco Penthouse Office is a minimalist space located in San Francisco, California, designed by Fogarty Finger. Originally designed by SOM in the late 1960s as the global headquarters for Bank of America, the building remains a key feature in the city’s skyline. However, with competition from newer, flashier high-rises in the SOMA district, the client aimed to create a space that stands out in a challenging leasing market. The office spans the southern half of the 49th floor, offering sweeping views of the city, the bay, and the natural landscape beyond.
The layout is divided into two equally sized suites, with significant space dedicated to communal areas, including a lounge, an entertainment pantry, and a gallery wall along the main corridor. Alcoves within the space provide areas for art displays and seating. The design incorporates the building’s distinctive zigzag profile, with chamfered edges featured in the millwork and furniture. The material palette draws from the surrounding urban environment, using natural roman clay paint, wood flooring, honed ceppo bianco marble, and dark grey oak. The result is a warm, tactile office environment that adds a contemporary hospitality-inspired touch to this mid-century modern building.
