Soho Apartment is a minimal apartment located in New York City, New York, designed by Magdalena Keck. This apartment explores the boundary between a residence and a gallery. The pure architecture of Renzo Piano-designed 565 Broom Street presented a stage for Magdalena Keck’s signature warm minimalism that quietly stimulates the senses while being functional and approachable. The building’s architectural features informed many of the design decisions. Furniture is placed and oriented to maximize the panoramic city views, and fully glazed curved corners are made focal points. A soft sheer grey curtain emphasizes the verticality of closely spaced mullions while creating a light-diffusing envelope around the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Furniture, art, and lighting are used together to offer a level of subtleness and precision and result in a sequence of carefully curated vignettes. The balance of contemporary and modern is achieved by pairing original Pierre Jeanneret seating with lamps by Pierre Yovanovitch, and a restored rosewood Joaquim Tenreiro chair beside the sculptural sofa by Christophe Delcourt This project also provided an opportunity to showcase some treasured pieces, like a Donald Judd artwork that has traced across the multiple collaborations between Keck and her client, and textile by Sheila Hicks. Both form part of a collection that the pair have worked together to develop over several years.
