Studio House is a minimal home located in Folkestone, United Kingdom, designed by Jonathan Burlow Architects. Previously characterized by a myriad of disconnected rooms and suspended ceilings, the redesign underwent a phased transformation, stripping away the old to usher in the new. The essence of Studio House lies in the juxtaposition of its exterior and interior. While its façade preserves the charm and politeness of Victorian architecture, the interiors paint a picture of modernity with an industrial touch. The redesign prioritizes openness, height, and fluidity. This vision was brought to life by strategically relocating a first-floor bathroom, thus giving rise to a double-height space. This modification not only infuses the home with a heightened sense of space but also pays homage to the Victorian grandiosity evident from the street. A noteworthy feature is the first-floor balcony that overlooks the expansive double-height area, reinforcing the theme of connectivity that’s central to the house’s design. Further amplifying its contemporary vibe, the house boasts expansive windows that not only flood the space with natural light but also provide sweeping views of Folkestone’s scenic hills.
