The Cut is a minimalist home located in London, United Kingdom, designed by _underscore architecture. The client envisioned a refurbishment that would not only meet high standards for acoustic and insulation performance but also be sustainable and cost-effective. The two apartments, situated on the first and second floors, feature a thoughtfully designed communal staircase. This staircase, curving at one end and illuminated by a rooflight, creates a serene and elegant entrance. Inside, the existing spine walls were preserved while other walls were removed to allow for flexible reconfiguration of the space. At the front of each apartment, a spacious kitchen and dining area provide ample room for socializing, while the accommodation and bathrooms are positioned towards the rear.
The building’s exterior was upgraded with insulation that exceeds Building Regulations, and new double glazing was installed throughout. The utilities rely solely on electric power, with heating provided by electric heaters and hot water supplied by an air source heat pump connected to a water cylinder. The materials chosen for the refurbishment emphasize minimalism and sustainability. Natural cork and solid ash are used extensively, complemented by satin stainless-steel ironmongery, creating a sleek and modern aesthetic that aligns with contemporary design principles.
