Threshold House is a minimalist residence located in London, United Kingdom, designed by Studio McW. This semi-detached split-level Victorian home in leafy De Beauvoir neighbourhood demonstrates how lower ground floor extension and redesign can balance private spaces with exuberant entertaining areas for busy couple seeking highly functional home. Previously renovated upper levels feature reception room, spare bedroom, and primary bedroom with ensuite, positioning lower ground floor as mediator balancing intimate and social functions.
The brief called for layout creating discovery moment for visitors descending from upper ground floor where lower ground opens and unfolds toward garden. Studio McW’s design conceals clever room arrangement forming primary entertaining space while carving additional private areas and improving connection to rear garden and its two mature protected palm trees. This spatial organization demonstrates how compact urban sites can maximize varied programmatic requirements through efficient planning and strategic circulation routes supporting both daily living and occasional hosting.
Recognizing home would benefit from more intimate living spaces, clients requested one lower ground floor room retained as flexible space functioning as home office or additional guest bedroom when required. Studio McW designed extension reaching as far as planning restrictions allowed with increased footprint now accommodating generous kitchen-dining area with adjoining living room, utility room, dual-access bathroom, and versatile study-spare bedroom demonstrating comprehensive spatial programming within constrained urban lot dimensions.
Studio McW crafted layered facade appearance retaining visual depth and balancing existing Victorian house proportions. Connected by thick monolithic brick wall, addition divides as two complementary faces articulating relationship between internal social spaces on left from more private rooms on right. Larger face bookends kitchen-dining area framing view through to living room beyond with tiered brickwork extending outward from full-height Crittall-style doors creating depth and solidity sense.
To right, in line with existing outrigger above, composition shifts with steel elements color-matched to metal doors contrasting with brickwork weight and texture. Initially conceived as fully brick elevation, metalwork introduction developed by Studio McW prevents extension feeling too imposing when viewed from garden while future-proofing structure for potential upper ground floor extension accommodating additional bedroom. This elegantly expressed metal framework projects to same depth as brick with simpler recessed windows including sliding element opening onto brick bench outside mirrored internally by built-in study seat.
