Trezzo sull’Adda is a minimalist space located in Milan, Italy, designed by studio wok. The project, near significant local landmarks like the city cemetery and the Church of Saints Gervasio and Protasio, represents a thoughtful blend of architectural reverence and modern sensibility. The design approach is two-pronged. Externally, subtle changes have been made to the building’s facade to respect its historical context. Internally, the focus shifts to creating a ‘secret garden’ within the courtyard. This garden serves as a reflective space, evolving with time and seasons, providing a natural backdrop for contemplation. The building’s street-facing side presents a restrained facade.
The rhythm of its structure is maintained through existing pillars and modified windows, now slim horizontal openings ensuring privacy and introspection. The entrance, marked by burnt larch wood, acts as a transitional space from the outer world to the inner sanctum of the funeral home. Inside, the layout is pragmatic. The west side, facing the street, accommodates functional spaces such as the entrance, restrooms, an office, and a corridor. The remaining areas, including the main chambers, are oriented towards the garden, with large windows fostering a sense of openness and connection with nature. A noteworthy feature is the new garden-facing facade, where burnt larch wood frames align with the building’s pillars.
These frames not only provide privacy and modulate light but also symbolize the threshold between life and remembrance. The interior atmosphere is characterized by simplicity and warmth, achieved through a neutral color scheme and natural materials. A notable design element is the 2.40-meter high horizon line, bringing the space to a human scale. The ceiling in the funeral chambers and entrance hall features soft vaults, subtly lit by natural light, enhancing the sense of tranquility. The funeral chambers themselves are divided into two areas: a private space for the deceased and a rest area for visitors, separated by rotating molded glass walls. This flexible design allows for a personalized experience during a time of grief.
