Ben is a minimalist table lamp by the Vancouver-based lighting design practice, Matthew McCormick Studio. As the studio’s first table lamp, Ben is inspired by founder, Matthew McCormick’s son, and celebrates the childlike wonder and moments of discovery he witnessed him experience.
Just as McCormick’s son instinctively collects and stacks found objects, the designer used the same method in the design of Ben. Experimenting with various proportions and placements of stacked stone forms — which make up the lamp’s base — and hand-blown glass bulbs, McCormick and his studio created a refined piece of lighting that is a delicate interplay of balanced forms.
“The design intent for Ben was always clear: I wanted to take the essence of joy I feel when I see my son play, learn and interact with the world around him, turning it into something tangible and emotive in shape and form,” shares McCormick. “I wanted the lamp to eternalize the marvel in those quiet moments when we discover something we love.”
Ben is designed and produced locally in Matthew McCormick Studio’s home base of Vancouver, Canada. Its base is hand-carved to order and is available in a diverse palette of solid stone varieties and colorways, with the possibility of exploring other materials on request.
