MtO 09 is a minimalist table lamp by the London-based design practice, ObjetsMito. Designed as part of the Edition I collection by ObjetsMito’s founder, Abid Javed, the lamp takes inspiration from mitochondrial biology, offering a fresh take on sculptural lighting.
The design of MtO 09 explores the unique characteristics of mitochondria, reflecting their ability to function as “cells within a cell”. Inspired by the distinct structure of the powerhouse of the cell, the lamp featured a sculpted clay body with an encased light compartment, mirroring mitochondria’s role in containing and energizing its surrounding environment.
Complementing the base’s biomorphic form is a washi paper shade — handcut and treated with a starch gel to keep its structure intact. Delicate brass safety pins attach the shade to the base, allowing a soft glow to emit from the familiar yet alien form.
MtO 09’s washi paper shades are customizable and can be mixed and matched with the table lamp bases. Each piece is handmade in Javed’s Hackney studio.
