The Pagoda Réflecteur is a minimalist table lamp by the Sydney-based design practice, Studio Henry Wilson. Created for Galerie Philia’s Desacralized exhibition, the piece draws inspiration from pagodas, tiered buildings commonly found across Asia, and distills their architectural forms into a refined object for everyday life.
Resting atop its symmetrical base of either maple or white alabaster is a thin plane of translucent stone, which diffuses a soft glow from a concealed light source within the base. At once quiet and contemplative, the Pagoda Réflecteur serves as a meditation on form, materiality, and use, and explores how these elements can evoke symbolic meaning in the absence of ritual.
“This is not a sacred object,” Wilson explains. “However, it expresses an enquiry into the elements that constitute objects we might hold to be sacred – considering not only form, materiality and usage, but also the intentions that can be subtly embodied in design.”
